Hypnolove 'Holiday Reverie' (Record Makers)

Hypnolove : Holiday Reverie / Midnight Cruising

A2/ Holiday Reverie (Mickey Moonlight Dub)
B1/ Midnight Cruising
B2/ Midnight Cruising (Mickey Moonlight Dub)
Released June 2011

Hypnolove are a cult band from Toulouse, in the southwest France. Their first album “Eurolove” included the French pop song 'Mademoiselle' which featured across French National radio stations, a Kiss cover, a Feist featuring (but sshh, no one is allowed to mention her real name, she became famous just after recording it) and even a punk track!

The album was going places. Nothing short of brilliant, but alas, audiences had a hard time understanding the logic of it, which of course was simply the songs, the taste, the musicality and the TALENT!

Hypnolove are truly European in their roots, as one can guess through the first album's name Eurolove. Henning Specht (keyboards) is German, Chiquinho (vocals and percussions) is Portuguese, and Nicolas Sentenac (guitars & bass) is French. They all like Eurodance, Italian basslines and Italian singers, German and American electronic music, but also classic R&B or more lately artists such as Connan Mockasin.

During the last few years, they recorded amazing remixes for Sebastien Tellier (the Rondo Venziano tribute remix of his anthem 'Fingers of Steel'), Findlay Brown, Go Go Charlton or Siobanh Donaghy. Whilst simultaneously composing and recording their new album penned for release fall 2011 on Record Makers. Mickey Moonlight, of Ed Banger fame, produces whose uncompromising vision is strong enough to find the backbone of their sound.

Logic again dictates the first single, which comes with Mickey Moonlight's dubs, old-school style. No other remixes will be available; simply the original tracks and their dub versions, released on limited edition yellow 12" vinyl, with cover art by Manu Cossu (who created Sebastien Tellier's 'Sexuality' cover).

Holiday Reverie :
The real season tune, one that you want to listen to while it's hot and sunny. The Hypnolove recipe is in full effect: synths / bass / afro guitars / arpeggios / funky percussions and high vocal, a truly original song in its essence.

Midnight Cruising :
Italo-disco bassline, real harp, a pedal-steel guitar and a fat beat with heart breaking falsetto vocals. The song is about a man's cruise for sexual satisfaction - a disturbing theme for such a delicate composition. Without realizing, Hypnolove take the same 'nu brit sound' as Metronomy or Kindness.

A perfect sample of an album destined to enlighten 2011!

T.E.E. (TURZI ÉLECTRONIQUE EXPÉRIENCE) – ÉDUCATION - RECORD MAKERS

T.E.E. (TURZI ÉLECTRONIQUE EXPÉRIENCE)
ÉDUCATION
RECORD MAKERS
Released 26 September 2011

After A and B, it was not too far-fetched to assume the next offering by TURZI would be C.
But no.

Education is actually the continuation, not of A and B, but of Turzi's first, pre-alphabetical album, 'Made Under Authority', released in 2006. That first album had been recorded essentially by a young Romain Turzi, then still a student, alone in the kitchen of his small flat Rue Biot, before he put together a band that would back him on his subsequent gigs and records. There, he shared for the first time his vision of continental rock, the music that fascinated him and fashioned his musical identity. Critics and public alike labelled him krautrock and thought no further.

It was in 2000 that Romain Turzi took the stage alone for the first time, under the moniker TURZI ÉLECTRONIQUE EXPÉRIENCE. His studies were now over and so was his education. That night was also the first appearance of a modern piece of hardware in his equipment: the Yamaha Tenori-On, which had been made available a few short months before, and which allowed him to control as many synths as he had fingers on each hand. This small-scaled digital revolution in the palette of a musician often described as an analog conservative would not stop there.

When he encountered a cheap Yamaha DX-27 in a street fair, he started becoming enticed by digital sounds and by MIDI technology, a weapon of mass construction that had so far been prohibited from his arsenal. Little by little, Yamaha would replace Roland in the heart of the musician.

As well as the musician, the music fan grew. His take on music became revisionary : half revisionist, half visionary. He realizes then that his education was far from being over.

He understands that 80s digital Tangerine Dream is far more charming than their 70s analog output, that Jean-Michel Jarre's Zoolook and Revolution are more rewarding than the worn-out Oxygène and Equinoxe, that Gainsbarre knows better than Gainsbourg. But mostly he sees how the line that binds these artists' oeuvres is more interesting than the oeuvres themselves.

Five years after Made Under Authority, Romain Turzi does not approach European music the same way he once did. Like a student starting his post-grad course, his vision reaches further, no longer synchronic but diachronic. In his personal pantheon, the Romanian Michael Cretu (of Enigma fame) or KLF's cult album 'Chill Out' now stand shoulder to shoulder with officially recognized maestros like Morricone or Kraftwerk. You will hear these influences in Education.

Romain Turzi has always known that krautrock and French psych, to which he's been compared half to death, were not born in 68 and did not die in 77 : they don't belong in history class but in philosophy. He's understood that the underground is where the seeds belong, but that seeds are to grow, bloom, and bear fruits.

A true artist, Romain Turzi once again broke free from his own codes. Instead of blinding us with science, he went for the unknown. From disciplinary rock he moved on to revisionary electronics. Turzi's Electronic Experience is set on educating the listener, transmit the process he himself went through, get him out of his intellectual comfort zone. It was already the case with Made Under Authority, then seen as an anomaly, before 'krautrock' became everybody's favourite buzzword – and, in fact, his path is similar to what the prime krautrockers themselves did, like Can embracing reggae or Kraftwerk going techno-pop under the influence of François Kevorkian, both propositions being ill-received in their time.

The François K of Education is PILOOSKI, well known for his edits of pre-existing tracks, making them more danceable and to the point. The same process was used on Turzi's tracks, sometimes too long or unfocused : coming straight from club culture, unlike Romain who'd sooner play music sitting down in his home than dancing in a club, Pilooski moved the cursor from layers of arrangements to the core of the songs, and provided them with the directness that will allow them to speak to the body as well as the mind.

In this album, Romain put everything he had in him, everything he'd lived before he started recording, things he probably could not have expressed before.
Made Under Authority was a photograph of the very instant when the songs were conceived, created and recorded, Education is a narrative, the portrait of an artist from birth to fatherhood.

THREE MAJORS :

ENFANCE (“childhood”) is the guitar track of Education, the most romantic one, the most 90s-sounding (age 10 to 19 for Romain), and certainly a key-track of the album. For his most personal album to date, he reached back to his childhood spent in Versailles, under the shadows of the Saint-Louis Cathedral. Religion is mentioned in this record like it was in each of the previous three, treated with distance and deference, like it often is by young artists, be them Joyce or Scorsese, who grew up in faith and associate it with childhood, and for whom the first adolescent unholy thoughts feel like a painful denial. The lyrics are laconic yet eloquent : Birth – Childhood – Conscience – Obedience – Adolescence – Abstinence – Romance – Concurrence – Empire of the senses – Disobedience – Tenderness – Niceness – Politeness – Confession – Pregnancy – Happiness – Goddess.

CROYANCE (“belief”) is the one track that links Education to A and B. It is the one that shows that under the digital wrapping lies the very same genome. It could have been named CONSTANCE (“consistency”) but the choice of that title seems to indicate that for Romain Turzi, consistency means never denying what you once believed in.

ERRANCE (“drifting”) – Every song on every Turzi album so far has kind of drifted, but this one is a major turning point in his career: it is the very first song written in a major key. In four albums, it is quite remarkable.

EN FRANCE ends the album by evoking Romain's drifting through France. It mixes the baroque of the old Versailles he grew up in with the sounds and rhythm from Les Antilles heard everywhere in the neighborhood he now lives in, the 18th arrondissement of Paris. Anyone who's been to Versailles knows that leaving it is like leaving history behind. Connaissance, Croyance, Constance, Enfance, Déviance, Errance, Descendance, En France. The rest is silence.

The Joker & The Thief 'Secret Ballroom' EP

Press Release
The Joker & The Thief – ‘Secret Ballroom’ EP
1. I Do Too
2. Be The Boy (Strummerville songs for the summer track)
3. My Name
4. Worm in the Soul
5. Fox
Release: July 11th
*Launch party at The Wheelbarrow, Camden on June 3rd

Expect the unexpected. What at first may walk in line may soon meander down routes that lead you to places of joy and exuberance. Expansive lyrics cover the mutilated mundane to the gleefully abstract, on a backdrop of gritty guitars, soulful sax and jazz-beat percussion, The Joker & The Thief like to walk their own way.

After years of playing live – from the 100 Club, to Hop Farm, to the top of London’s Primrose Hill – The Joker & The Thief finally present their debut release – the ‘Secret Ballroom’ EP. The five-track EP creeps from atmospheric beginnings to bombastic sonic explosions, focusing on their authentic, rootsy sound combining powerful voices, bellowing saxophone, foot-stomping rhythms and gutsy guitars.

- video to 'I Do Too'

“Our shows have always been messy, chaotic and with lots of improvisation, so it seems strange to capture our sound in some sort of permanent form. I hope we’ve managed to do that and maintain the raucousness and spontaneity you get from being in the same room as us. We’re very proud of these songs, they’ve morphed and grown out of hundreds of performances and now they exist even when we’re not playing them, which seems bizarre, but exciting too… “

Named after their massive love of Dylan and Hendrix, the band of childhood friends, who formed when they were five, draw their influences from a number of styles. “When asked, we sometimes say we play soul music. There’s an obvious blues influence in a lot of our stuff but we listen to gospel, rock ‘n’ roll, psychedelia, folk, new stuff, old stuff, weird stuff, spoken word, vaudeville… We all remember seeing the Tiger Lillies in Shockheaded Peter when we were about nine years old and I think the offbeat peculiarity of an act like that is very important to us.”

Dan, Justin and Josh have stunned audiences with their musical bravado and performance. The lyrics get under your skin, rewriting the love songs of the past with a modern and individual twist and the music grabs you by the collar with its incessant passion dripping out of every note.

Catch The Joker & The Thief at The Wheelbarrow on June 3rd, the Strummerville campfire at Glastonbury, Larmer Tree with Jools Holland and more to be announced.

The Joker & The Thief:
Howlin' Dan Grabiner - vocals, percussion.
Justin Gartry - guitar and kick-drum.
Josh Elliott - saxophones, accordion, ukulele, musical saw, piano, vocals and other stuff.

Sebastien Tellier 'Love Songs' (Record Makers)

'Love Songs' is out now on Record Makers (France) digital only:
http://sebastientellier.bandcamp.com/album/love-songs

Sebastien Tellier has been releasing music since 2000. His 3 studio albums, supplemented by a live album and a score, all contain extremely romantic music. 'Love Songs' is all about that, a focus on the maestro's writing skills, an opportunity to re-discover a true composer and listen to some extremely moody tunes. Tellier is a one-of-a-kind talent, in the vein of Leonard Cohen, Serge Gainsbourg and Ennio Morricone.

A bit of Tellier history:

His career started in 2000 with the release of his now cult album 'L'Incroyable Vérité' ('The Unbelievable Truth'). This beatless acoustic album was mixed by Mr Oizo, the wizard of electro. It features gems such as 'Fantino' which was used by Sofia Coppola in her film 'Lost In Translation', or 'Universe' which leads the scene in which Daft Punk cast off their human masks and decide to remain actual robots, in their 'Electroma' manifesto.

Justice, MGMT, Phoenix, Daft Punk, Ariel Pink and many others have praised 'L'Incroyable Vérité' as a life-changing listening experience.

In 2004, for his debut in the beat-driven music world with his album 'Politics', Sebastien decided to hire the best drummer in the world: Tony Allen, of Fela fame. His sensual gift was a perfect match for Sebastien's moody compositions. The sessions gave birth to the ultimate love song: 'La Ritournelle', still praised almost a decade after its release. Philippe Zdar (who recently produced Phoenix and The Beastie Boys) took his mission very seriously and spent an entire week mixing 'La Ritournelle'. He still
thinks it's his best mix ever.

'Sessions' (2006) was a transitional album, a time to revisit his past work. 10 songs recorded in one day was the deal. The spare music allowed Sebastien to express his musical skills in full effect on guitars and vocals. For the first time, he covered 'La Dolce Vita', a hidden treasure of French singer Christophe which became a must-hear tune, brimming with optimism. Once again, Sebastien proved that he understands modern-day life.

Tellier's albums are all about concepts. 2008's 'Sexuality' with its explicit name, was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, from the electronic duo Daft Punk - his only album production outside of Daft Punk. The album became a hit as a whole and was quoted by Vice as 'the best thing that happened to France since the allied troops landed in 1945'. 'Divine' was chosen by the French National TV to represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade. Tellier's presence in the contest was a big buzz worldwide, and many of the 150 million viewers probably remember his arrival in a golf car, and his Helium-fueled voice!

The 'Love Songs' album features the most romantic songs of these albums, as well as some bonuses from 2007's OST for 'Narco' and 3 unreleased live performances recorded in Japan, January 2011.

Sebastien Tellier is currently working on the score for a long feature with Pete Doherty and Charlotte Gainsbourg, whilst finishing the follow up to 'Sexuality', which will be released sometime in 2012.

In the meantime, enjoy his love songs!
