Track Records - epic 60s label relaunches

TRACK RECORDS Presents
A DISSENTERS GALLERY
Released May 24

Track Records was one of the least compromising record labels of the ‘60s - and arguably the most successful and significant. Now, the brainchild of Kit Lambert and his street-wise partner, Chris Stamp (brother of actor Terence), is alive once again.

The success story of Track Records began only three days after its first disc was issued: On Monday, March 20, 1967, ‘Purple Haze’ by The Jimi Hendrix
Experience entered the National charts.

The Who and the Jimi Hendrix Experience were the first artists to be signed by Track, and Track Records went on to sign more of the most innovative artists in the United Kingdom: The Crazy World of Arthur Brown (‘Fire’):

Thunderclap Newman (‘Something In The Air’):

a young Marc Bolan in John's Children (‘Desdemona’):

and the Dutch group Golden Earring (‘Radar Love’):

In 1999, former Stranglers/Cult manager Ian Grant resurrected Track Records and over the next 10 years released contemporary recordings by Big Country, Joe Brown, Ronnie Lane, Paul Kossoff, Blue Cheer, and the Dirty Strangers featuring Keith Richards, along with new releases from original Track Records stablemates, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown & Thunderclap Newman, and the soon-to-be released box set by John Sinclair.

Now for the first time since those heady days of 1967, Track Records is once again opening its doors to brand new bands. In association with Strummerville, the music charity set up to help new artists in Joe Strummer’s name, Track will release The Dissenters’ Gallery, a quarterly sampler of new talent, on both CD and download.

Released in the UK, The Dissenters’ Gallery Volume 1 features two tracks each from such up and coming gems as Nimmo and The Gauntletts, Little Specks Of Blood Lust Blood, The Operation, The Riff Raff, Panama Kings, Ginga and Dekay. It’s a broad, eclectic mix of high quality music and artists, united by a desire to get good music heard through the noise of mediocrity out there.

QUOTES FROM THE PLAYERS:

Simian Mobile Disco: JULY 4TH / AUGUST 8TH / SEPTEMBER 5TH / SEPTEMBER 19TH

“Last years' We Love with Carl Craig and Paul Woolford was by far our favourite gig of the Ibiza season. We are really excited to be asked back for a residency, partly because we get to showcase all the new techno we've been making for our new label Delicacies and partly because we get to hang out in the best club on the island.”

Claude VonStroke: JULY 18TH / AUGUST 8TH / SEPTEMBER 19TH

"This is the first summer I will be coming as a resident of We Love… Space. I'm really excited to bring that San Francisco flavor that people so rarely get to hear, to the island. Get ready to get low."

Groove Armada: JUNE 20TH / JULY 18TH / AUGUST 15TH (LIVE) / SEPTEMBER 19TH

"Its brilliant to be back on the We Love… terrace this year. It feels like we're coming home. We're excited to bring our back-to-back DJ sets to space, alongside a very special 'Black Light' live show in la Discoteca. Bring on the lasers, and roll on summer."

Hot Chip (felix and al dj set): JUNE 13TH / JULY 11TH / SEPTEMBER 5TH

“We're taking time out from the Hot Chip world tour to come back to We Love… because it's one of the best places to play in the world. We had a great time playing on the Terrace last summer and a very memorable, joyful, fist pumping set in the main room, which was amazing. This year we'll be keeping things minimal but funky, trying to restrain ourselves from too many massive breakdowns, and dropping in the odd exclusive from the Hot Chip remix catalogue and our new techno project Grown Men. Roll on the summer!”

Joris Voorn: JUNE 27TH / JULY 18TH / AUGUST 8TH / AUGUST 29TH / SEPTEMBER 12TH (live) / SEPTEMBER 26TH
“Last year's 'We Love… gigs were absolutely amazing, so I was very happy to be invited to be a resident in 2010. I'll be doing six gigs, also playing on the We Love… terrace for the first time. Looking forward a lot to every single date, I’m ready to do something very special. There's a few tracks I'm working on at the moment, so I'll have many personal secret weapons to try out on the Space crowd! See you all this summer... “

Funkagenda: JUNE 13TH / JULY 11TH / JULY 25TH / AUGUST 15TH / SEPTEMBER 12TH / SEPTEMBER 26TH.
"Being asked to be resident on the We Love… sunset terrace is pretty much every DJs dream. When I was younger I read about DJs making that place their own, bringing their vibe and their sound to the clubbers on Sundays. I am looking forward to the challenge of making my mark on it too. It was my favourite gig of last year and I want to try and create that magic every time I play this summer!"

Paul Arnold (Chew The Fat!): JUNE 20TH / JULY 11TH / AUGUST 15TH / SEPTEMBER 19TH.
Having hosted Chew the Fat! in the Red Box for the last three years, a chance to host four parties in the Discoteca in 2010 is pretty bloody exciting. Although not as strange as it initially may seem as a natural progression has taken place each year with the music our guests and residents have played in the Red Box getting closer and closer to the sound of the main room until finally this year We Love have recognized that the two should meet. Has the underground gone over ground or has Chew the Fat! consistently been at the cutting edge of what’s new?! Either way, We Love… always embrace a chance to showcase a fresh sound and with Chew the Fat! and Foamo as resident the Discoteca looks set to rock 4 times this year for sure.

Burlington Project: (WEEKLY in The Red Box)
“Yeah I am really excited to be back in the Red Box this summer. We came in as a new entity last year with Burlington project and we did some really special parties, with some amazing guests. We are back for the full sixteen weeks this year and people have a better idea of what we are about now. We will be introducing a unique new project for the additional 8 dates we are doing this year; last year we introduced artists including Martin Buttrich, Appleblim, The Mole and Einzelkind to Space and We Love, we are taking things a step further this year in introducing new artists to the equation... we have something very special in store.”

no La La land

yeah, so was on the the hairplane, ready to take off, and the pilot says 'not going anywhere today folks'. So no Coachella and sit-ups in LA this year. But it's okay as mother earth has spoken via the natural beauty of Iceland and we should listen and look after her. She doesn't want us to fly, so we shall not fly. It's also massively to do with mercury retrograde... affects travel and communication..! Cosmic.

Am researching Track Records (an epic indie label from the 1960s which is just about to relaunch) and these, two of their first releases, seem pretty apt right now.

ABRACADA - new label - launch artists include: Brodinski, Yuksek, Poni Hoax and more...

New label, based in Paris, founded by Manu Barron (behind the Social Club in Paris and the manager of Das Pop and more) and Dirk De Ruyck (formerly of Eskimo Recordings and manager of Aeroplane and more), with releases already slated from Brodinski and Yuksek (as The Krays), Poni Hoax, Villa, MikIX The Cat and The Aikiu... Check below for full infos!

ABRACADA
It's a kinda magic...

This is an era where Lady Gaga is the most outrageously avant-garde live performer since Björk. A time when the savage punkrockers of Yeah Yeah Yeahs top the singles chart - with a little help from a former tour DJ of Kanye West. Glitzy R&B diva's assign dubstep producers for a healthy dose of otherworldly beats, and forgotten chart-busters by Olivia Newton John or Paul Simon are tweaked into cosmic space dust by disco connoisseurs. The thin line between good and bad taste has never been so blurred. Be it Hot Chip namedropping R. Kelly, Tiga's tongue-in-cheek routine or Bollywood going global, 'cutting edge' artists have never been so comfortable with revealing their 'pop' side.

Forget the carefully moulded and harmless androids manufactured at Disney headquarters, the real future dominators of pop music you'll find right at the edge. That's where the creators of ABRACADA are looking. Find the edge - and tiptoe right over it - it's like Winston Churchill once said: 'attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.'

All you need to step into the game is a well trained ear and muscled instinct, but the founders of this spellbinding enterprise are no rookies. Manu Barron and Dirk De Ruyck both carry their share of credentials with aplomb.

ABRACADA is their joined mission on the frontier of pushing groundbreaking new artists into the music arena. No hocus pocus, no hidden cards or tricks up their sleeve, just honest, fresh and intoxicating tunes for modern times. That you can dance to. Or not, it's up to you!

Manu's stint as a concert- and party promoter at the l'Aeronef venue went far from unnoticed well beyond the limits of its home town Lille. He was also closely involved in transforming Dour Festival from a provincial alternative festival to an international renowned gathering of musical tribes. Manu took his expertise to the next level when he started managing artists such as Das Pop, Brodinksi and The Aikiu. On weekends, you'll find him at Social Club in Paris, where he's chief of A&R.

For years, when Ghent nightlife had something exciting on offer, chances were Dirk had his finger in it. Retro/Grade from Bugged Out! in Bristol

First outing you get of their new track too...

Johnny Suede

This is in my top five films ever. It should totally be a cult classic. so much hidden humour and pretty darkside in moments. Brad Pitt is legend... as well as little roles from Samuel L Jackson and Nick Cave..

And I now have a new word: 'Pompadour'.

this is just one part:

'king OF accordion'... and look at his head movements... it's beautiful!

Tiga interview on Resident Advisor

Nice! and check the sense of hummous that RA highlights also - stick yer tongue in yer cheek TiGa. tres drole. :)

Tayo's Tracksuit party - May 30th

Tayo's Tracksuit Party –
Paradise, 19 Kilburn Lane, Kensal Green, W10
Sunday May 30th – Bank Holiday Weekend
Line up:
Upstairs: Ed Simons (Chemical Brothers), Dan Beaumont (Disco Bloodbath), Jack Beats, Ben Westbeech, Tayo, DJ Booth + VERY SPECIAL GUEST & more TBA
Downstairs: Hip-Hop Karaoke
8pm - 3am

Tayo’s Tracksuit P.A.R.T.Y returns for its annual Shindig at Paradise By Way Of Kensal Green, on Sunday May 30th.

A chance for people to ‘get their style on in some Nylon’, and for Tayo to show off his tracksuit collection, this is now the tenth year of Tayo’s Tracksuit Parties – with past events held at Snowbombing, Bestival, Nottinghill Carnival and the best boozers in and around London Town.

To celebrate it’s going to be a Classics Party, each DJ will hit a different musical era upstairs, whilst Hip-Hop Karaoke takes over the bottom floor.

Ed Simons from the Chemical Brothers will play a Hacienda set, Dan Beaumont will play classic Disco Dloodbath music, Jack Beats is doing Classic Hip-Hop, Ben Westbeech hasn’t decided yet, Tayo’s doing Classic House… And… we also have a Very Special Guest - we can confirm that he is one of the previous and favourite superstar players (which include Felix Basement Jaxx, Joe Hot Chip, Roots Manuva, Grandmaster Flash), but we cant say who it is… More guests to be announced upstairs also…

Downstairs, the Hip-Hop Karaoke crew (who run nights at the Social and more) will provide the best Hip-Hop Karaoke tunes for you to flex some vocals to. All in tracksuits, of course.

“Why do I love tracksuits? Hip-Hop / B-Boy Connection; seeing a Taccini tracksuit with the stripe behind the knee when I was a kid and a wannabe breakdancer, Run DMC and Stetsasonic rocking the Nylon in the 80's, Bob Marley playing football in head to toe Adidas... Why wouldn’t I?” – Tayo

Get your tracksuit on and have some classical fun. Yeah.

Back to Strummerville!

First day back today. Feels so, so good to be back.
Music with a purpose; helping people through music.
Lots of exciting stuff happening... including a new film by Don Letts about the charity. The worldwide premier was held at SXSW (great response) and the UK premier is coming at the Sensoria Festival (www.sensoria.org.uk) on 23rd April. Check this interview with Don Letts from SXSW:

SXSW: Don Letts ('Strummerville') from Devin Pike on Vimeo.

PLUS: loads of festivals (Glastonbury, Secret Garden), Strummerville Summer Sessions (5th June) and great music, of course...

Check www.strummerville.com for more info.

My Own Private Idaho

One of my favourite films ever. Loved River Phoenix ever since i was a little girl and saw Stand By Me (also amazing). And Gus Van Sant is a slightly sideways legend. Check this excerpt from ace gay German:

This is the song without Udo Kier's Idaho performance layered over... pretty cosmic!

other Van Sant films of note: Mala Noche, Last Days, Milk and Goodwill Hunting...

Press Release
Tiga’s Planet Turbo
World Tour – beginning April 29th

Beginning on April 29 and continuing through August, Turbo will present a new series of worldwide events, headlined by Tiga. The Planet Turbo shows will feature an incredible array of performers, including Boys Noize, Erol Alkan, 2ManyDJs, Zombie Nation, Ivan Smagghe, PROXY, Sei A, Jori Hulkkonen and Thomas Von Party.

“We dreamt up the concept by the ecologically sustainable fireplace at Turbo Headquarters, located deep in the Mountains of Montreal,” says Tiga, calling from a mobile payphone. “The tour is something of a Victory Lap celebrating its own inevitable triumph. We’ve run the numbers, and we’ve talked to people from Main Street to Sweat Boulevard. We know what our party people want, and they’re going to get it - so good.”

The “Planet Turbo” tour will be mirrored by the release of exclusive content, including remixes of Turbo and Tiga classics, plus new material from a veritable who’s-hooray of the biggest names in dance music. There will also be a wealth of bonus Web features, as Turbo artists and friends share their unbelievably unique perspectives on the countries visited.

“The tour will take us to the U.S., Canada, Holland, the UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia, Belgium, Portugal and Sweden. I did plenty of research beforehand, to make sure these places fit our definition of ‘planet’. We wanted to concentrate on the Earth’s surface, meaning we had to turn down a couple of dates at Magmafest and Crust Sensations,” says Tiga

“What we’re doing is like planting trees all over the world, but far more important. When you sow a funky idea in the soul of a young person, the sky ain’t no kind of limit. And I intend to reap, creep.” - Tiga

Swedish director Andreas Nilsson has been working closely with Tiga and will provide themed stage production for the Planet Turbo Tour. Details are kept under wraps until the tour starts, but Nilsson’s previous stage work includes The Knife and Fever Ray and he has also directed videos for artists including Peter Bjorn& John, Royksopp, The Knife, MGMT and more, check: http://www.nixonnoxin.com/

At the Tour’s end, Turbo will release a special Planet Turbo compilation, including the best material from throughout the tour.

Full tour dates, exclusive music, information, interviews along the tour and more, can be found at: www.planet-turbo.com

Favourite cosmic website of the moment

you can put in your DOB deets and find out where all the planets were when you were born, and what it all means. And how what the planets are up to now effect you!

"oh no, my compooter broke because mercury is retrograde", or, "our moons just aren't in the right place right now". hehe. etc etc... It's brilliant.
