Joe Strummer Tribute Concert DVD

Cast A Long Shadow
Joe Strummer Tribute Concert DVD
Released March 14th 2011

In 2007 a Joe Strummer tribute and benefit concert was held in Los Angeles, honouring the former great frontman for The Clash, and later The Pogues and The Mescaleros, who had passed away five years earlier.

The concert featured performances from US based artists on whom the influence of Strummer was immeasurable - Love & Rockets, Zander Schloss & The Wilderness years (featuring Flea, Martyn Lenoble, Dix Denney, Jonny Polonsky, Tim Aaron, Victor Indrizzo, Emiliano Almeida, Dermot Mulroney, Kieran Mulroney, Gus Seyffert, Charlie Wadhams, Craig Jackman, Stefan Lirakis and Pete Weiss), Hellride (featuring Mike Watt, Peter Distefano and Jane’s Addiction’s Stephen Perkins), David J (Bauhaus, Love And Rockets), La Plebe and Melodee Fernandez, with the event hosted by Chris Salewicz.

The artists involved performed a mixture of songs from Joe Strummer’s diverse musical career – including David J covering ‘Death Is A Star, a wonderful rendition of ‘Spanish Bombs’ by Melodee Fernadez, a blistering rendition of ‘Rudie Can’t Fail’ by La Plebe and Zander Schloss And The Wilderness Years - an all-star cast including Flea from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers - covering songs from after Strummer’s years as The Clash frontman… ‘The wilderness’ years.

A fantastic and poignant evening for all involved, the special night has now been made available on DVD with proceeds going to Strummerville – The Joe Strummer New Music Foundation.

“When in doubt..you gotta ask yourself..what would Joe do? We still gotta get the "Bop Message" to the people." – Zander Schloss

Special thanks goes to Marc Malakie and Kevin Haskins for oraganising the event and producing the DVD.

Featured performances:

• Hellride - 1977
• Hellride - Hate And War
• Hellride - Career Opportunities

Zombie Nation 'Chickflick' (UKW)

Press Release
Zombie Nation ‘Chickflick’
Including Siriusmo and Boris Dlugosch remixes
Released 21 March
UKW Records

Sliding in directly after his Overshoot /Squeek double A-side release at the end of 2010 and his latest ZZT collaboration with Tiga (ZZafrika), Zombie Nation is back with his new single, ‘Chickflick’.

Erol Alkan already gave the track a mighty fine big-up on his BBC 6Music show, calling it "phenomenally brilliant," so we're off to a good start then... An orchestra of bleeps and synths, ‘Chickflick’ is frenetic with a partial kickdrum. Siriusmo´s dramatic remix has already gained rapturous feedback when it was previewed in Zombie Nation´s February live broadcast, whilst Boris Dlugosch´s remix completes the package and is guaranteed to cause cracks on the floor.

News for the Zombie Nation:

In January 2011, Zombie Nation invited people from around the world to tune in via the web and collaborate, live, on the creation of a track. The ‘Day Of Many’ experiment allowed fans insight and input into the creative process in Zombie Nation’s studio – you can check the two hours here: http://www.tv.zombienation.com

In April and May Zombie Nation will be hitting USA, dates to be announced soon. He is also preparing a blinding lighting setup to synch with his live show. Keep your eyes open while you can!

Zombie Nation is also working with Tiga on a full-length ZZT album. In true ZZT style, details will be released when they are ready for you to know about it…

Footnote:

Since 1999, Zombie Nation, AKA Florian Senfter, has been melting brains, aided by the sounds of a variety of vintage machines and analog toys, from obscure 70s broadcast mixing desks to re-amped 60s valve radios.

His two latest long-players – ‘Black Toys’ and ‘Zombielicious’, released in 2006 and 2009 respectively - display the Zombie Nation signature sound to perfection - dirty, funk-fuelled analogue grooves laden with ingenious melodies and other-worldly production techniques, delivered via a plethora of the most aurally orgasmic outboard toys (he likes to play: http://www.youtube.com/user/zombienation1)

Discodeine album launch in Paris - Jarvis comes to play

http://pointephemere.tumblr.com/post/3291255877/crazy-party-discodeine-feat-jarvis-cocker-live

Sexual Nature

went to the Natural History Museum to see an exhibition on animals' sexual natures... apart from learning that Bonobo monkeys like to have a lot of sex (anyone, anywhere, anytime - they look very happy), some animals can change sex, foxes lock, giraffes have a cork screw shaped appendage (so do camels - I've seen them at it!), some animals kill eachother after sex, some just die after sex, snails like sadomasochism ... I also learnt that Isabella Rossalini now has a lucrative career in animal porn... they had a few of these, each on different animals, dotted around the exhibition, geniuss! she's also the lady from david lynch's 'blue velvet' - i like her!

Charli XCX

Ahead of Un-Convention at the Roundhouse next week (Feb 26th), I wanted to send you some little highlights on a couple of the artists involved... Charli XCX is pretty amazing from what I have seen of her (she reminds me of Peaches) and I wanted to make sure you are fully aware of her.

As part of the Un-Convention Factory, Charli XCX will be covering a song from The Clash's 'London Calling' album, with Viv Albertine (ex The Slits). Full information on Un-Convention at the Roundhouse can be found HERE

Check below for her biog and a link to a (ropey but it works that way) video that i think captures her well..

If you don't know Charli XCX yet, give it five minutes. The teenage prodigy's about to explode into 2011, not so much making an entrance as kicking pop music's door in and running rampage through its front room. Armed with a rampant imagination and a gym bag full of epic electro pop tunes, and backed by a growing army of top producers and worldwide fans, she's got the current crop of stars in her sights and more than enough ammo to take them down.

Now she's here with two tracks set to blow the UK sidewards. 'Stay Away', co-written and produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (We Are Scientists, Diplo), is as knock-you-to-the-floor as first introductions come. A massive scuzz bass driven anthem that combines all the majestic bluster of the 80s with distinct post-millennial production, it's an epic and heart-wrenching addition to pop's cannon about "unrequited love and being tainted by someone so you can't be around them any more". Witch house poster boys Salem and West London producer of the moment T Williams have both already jumped at the chance to remix.

It's joined by 'Jungle', a faster rollick through electroclash's undergrowth co-written and produced by NME hottest producer MNEK. Part organic Fever Ray soundscape, part madcap d'n'b safari it sees lyrics snatched from Candi Staton and showcases Charli's range, from early Gwen Stefani emotion to leaps of falsetto and Nicki Minaj-esque raps.

Charli's not just sought after for her music though; she's been muse to both Rankin and David Bailey already. "Bailey was fucking cool but so scary" she remembers. "He said 'you've got a lovely voice, but your trousers are fucking shit'. To be fair they were pretty bad trousers, full of proper retro killer colours like a baby had thrown up on my leg."

Luciano remixes Recloose for Planet-e

Recloose ft Dwele ‘Can’t Take It’ – REMIXES
A1: Luciano Remix
B1: Original
B2: Milton Jackson Remix
Planet-E
Vinyl / Digital - Released 8th March 2011

In 2011 Carl Craig’s Planet-E imprint turns 20. To celebrate, as well as a world-wide label tour starting in March 2011, Craig is releasing a best of Planet-E compilation – entitled ‘20 F@#&ING Years - We Ain't Dead Yet’ (released digitally February 22nd / vinyl in June), and releasing a monthly remix release from the Planet-E back catalogue, where friends of the label choose their favourite Planet-E release and add their take on it.

The first in the remix EP series is Luciano’s remix of Recloose’s ‘Can’t Take It’. Originally released in 2000, the package also comes with a Milton Jackson remix, as well as the coveted original.

Swiss / Chilean producer Luciano, owner of Cadenza Records and a DJ to witness-with-reason, creates almost 13 minutes of rhythmic anticipation that leaves you lost in a trance. Luciano will be a heavy feature on the Planet-E 20 Tour, with Carl Craig / Luciano back2back sets planned in Dublin, Liverpool, Miami, Germany and more to be announced… “I've been following Planet E since my early days, I could only say 'yes thanks' when Carl asked me doing this remix for the 20 years birthday of the label… The Luci family mix...” - Luciano

The futuristic and soulful original – fusing Electronic, Hip-Hop and Jazzy elements - comes next; Detroit based Recloose released his first ever EP on Planet-E in 1999, entitled ‘So This Is The Dining Room’, three EPs followed including ‘Can’t Take It’.

Milton Jackson, best known for his releases on Tronicsole and Glasgow Underground, creates an analogue heavy / bass heavy remix - deep house almost venturing into techno…

Coming in April will be the Kirk Degiorgio remix of Martin Buttrich’s ‘Full Clip’. Remixes from artists including Ricardo Villalobos, Dubfire, Richie Hawtin, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Francois K, Mad Mike Banks, Dennis Ferrer and others will follow in 2011. Stay tuned for more news.

One of the leading electronic music labels in the history of the genre, Planet-E, is taking a moment to celebrate and share a bit of its history, before getting back to the business of looking forward to the future.

Stephan Bodzin Vs Marc Romboy ' Luna' - 3-CD Boxset

Stephan Bodzin Vs Marc Romboy
Luna
3 CD boxset
Released: 4th March 2011
Systematic

Just a few minutes till impact. Final approach, three, two, one…
Stephan Bodzin and Marc Romboy ain´t no astronauts. They are first and foremost musicians, producers and long time friends. Both would admit that arguing and talking music is as important as making it.

Together with their own long running imprints, Systematic Recordings and Herzblut Recordings, they have proven how to build up a distinct label sound. However, similar to some well-known astronauts, the word "Luna" has a very special meaning to the musicians because it´s the name of Marc´s daughter and coincidentally that of Stephan´s wife as well. Therefore it had been the obvious choice when they were
looking for a fitting title name back in 2005. Six years on, and the project nears its final touchdown and is honored with a triple-CD and an outstanding vinyl-set of six records!

For the past years, track names such as 'Callisto', 'Puck', 'Atlas' or 'Phobos' have been regular listings inside various playlists and DJ Charts. And similar to the nearly eternal footprints on the moon, these tracks have proven how to set up an acoustic milestone, which is why some special synthapella-versions (without
beats or percussion parts) pay tribute to the concept of „less is more“. Previously only available on vinyl, 'Luna' compiles 16 tracks plus two brand new productions ('Triton' & 'Oberon'). The stylistic range is additionally highlighted by an 80 minutes mix, ranging somewhere between a truly modern club sound and bold electronic experiments. It is this range of possibilities, backed by the love for certain sound worlds originating from vintage synthesizers such as the Moog and the Arp or drum-computers like the ones from Roland and Vermona, that has worked like a magnet for other producers to ardently work on remixes.

More then 20 different producers from all over the world take you to a musical orbit, starting in Germany with Moritz von Oswald (Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound), Pan-Pot (Mobilee), Dominik Eulberg, Chris Liebing, Martin Buttrich (Desolat), Roman Flügel (Dial) und Robag Wruhme (Pampa Records), continuing with Gui Boratto (Kompakt) from Brazil, Speedy J (Plus 8) and Joris Voorn from The Netherlands, Minilogue from
Sweden and even Abe Duque from New York from the U.S.A.. An electronic transmission from the moon to the Earth takes a little more than one second to cover the distance. But when listening to 'Luna', you won´t dare to think in minutes or seconds ignition sequence start, trois, deux, unité!

'Luna' Live Tour 2011:
04.03. Rocker 33, Stuttgart (Germany),
10.03. Electric Pickle, Miami,

Stevie Nicks

I, like everyone else who is remotely interested in music in England, watched the Fleetwood Mac docu on BBC last week. Amazing! of course there are all the Fleetwood Mac greats, but I never knew that Stevie Nicks did this also (Destiny's Child used the riff), I've not stopped listening to it since.

Take 6 special music collaborations with 12 musicians including Jon McClure (Reverend Soundsystem), Viv Albertine (The Slits), Charli XCX, Young Fathers Lupa (Colombian MC) plus many more, add top producer Jagz Kooner along with 80 invited music industry experts and 200 participants. Then record, produce and release an album in one day.

The 6 bands will cover or collaborate on tracks from London Calling by The Clash. The Clash have quite a connection with The Roundhouse, playing their 5th ever gig there and rehearsing just behind the venue.

The premise of the event is to demystify the music industry, laying bare the processes involved, and allowing participants a unique insight into what often seems a rather impenetrable business, with a view to inspiring all involved to pursue their own creative endeavours.

The event involves some of the most influential to most inspirational people in music including:

Jagz Kooner, John Dyer (Domino Records), Jon McClure, Mark Meharry (Music Glue), John Robb, Howard Monk (The Local), John Emspon (Eden Sessions), Scott Cohan, Fiona Stewart (Green Man), Ray Paul (BBC 1Xtra), Dan Rafferty (Shambala), Lee Denny (Lee Fest), Helienne Lindvall, Ian Johnson (Enter Shikari), Ammo Taylor (Punch Records), Mark Williams (Heart and Soul), Laura Kidd, Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music), Tracey Moberly, Stefan Szczelkun (Agitdisco), Viv Albertine (ex. The Slits), Charli XCX, Young Fathers, Jo Good (BBC 6 Music), Kim Booth (Rebel Butterfly), Jon McClure (RSS), Louis Barabbas (Debt Records), Ben Watts (Buzzin Fly Records), Khalid Amin, Jez Collins (Birmingham City University), Lupa (Colombian Hip Hop from Medellin), Trish Whelan (Strummerville), Nicole McNeilly (Musicares, Sri Lanka), Andrew Dubber (New Music Strategies), Steve Lawson... plus many more.

Accompanying the recording will be a selection of panels, workshops and showcases. The highlight panels feature Music As A Tool For Social Change - featuring people working on music projects in Sri Lanka, Brazil, Colombia and the UK; The Politicisation of Music; Women in Music; New Music Strategies; an Event and Festival Session. A range of new digital platforms will also be showcased including MusicGlue, SoundCloud and Song Kick. There will be one-to-one consultancies for bands and live music performance throughout the day.

Un-Convention Factory has been held in Macclesfield and Goiania, Brazil. For the first Un-Convention Factory event an old mill in Macclesfield was transformed into the Un-convention Factory, a bustling hive of musicians, industry experts and young creatives all working together to produce a brand new album over the course of the day. Beginning at 9am, with an intro from Har Mar Superstar, eight bands including the likes of I Am Kloot, Reverend Soundsystem and The Whip recorded in half hour sessions in front of 300 participants.

Notes to Editor

Un-Convention is a global grassroots music and creative community - that meets physically and virtually to share ideas; discuss and debate cutting edge issues around music, technology and creativity; and facilitates members engagement with their peers. Un-Convention is not about the business of music. The community is driven by a not for profit initiative that sees opportunity for the grassroots in the changes to the way music is being produced, consumed and sustained. There have been 15 Un-Convention events worldwide since 2008.

Artists including Jarvis Cocker, Billy Bragg, Don Letts, Roisin Murphy, British Sea Power and many more have been involved in Un-Convention Factory events around the world.
